CavFutures is delighted to announce the appointment of Caroline Darney as its new Director of Programming and Community Engagement beginning February 19th. With an extensive background in sports media and events spanning over the last nine years, Darney brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted passion for Virginia athletics to her new role.
Prior to joining CavFutures, Darney made significant contributions to the sports media landscape, having worked with outlets such as Inside Lacrosse, SB Nation, and For The Win | USA Today. Her journey in sports journalism has been marked by an impressive portfolio of coverage, including landmark events like the 2014 and 2018 Men’s Basketball ACC championships, the 2019 Men’s Basketball national championship, the 2019 Men’s Lacrosse national championship, and the 2022 College World Series, among others.
After graduating from the University of Virginia, Darney served as a Naval Flight Officer in the U.S. Navy for eight years. During her time in the Navy, she amassed over 1,300 combat hours as an aviator and concluded her service as a Foreign Liaison Officer stationed at the Pentagon. Following her distinguished military career, Darney pursued her academic interests, earning a master’s degree in Sports Industry Management from Georgetown University. She later returned to her alma mater to obtain an Executive M.B.A. from Darden in 2022, further enriching her expertise in the field.
Beyond her professional pursuits, Darney is known for her love of pop culture, movies, and spending quality time with her two beloved dogs, Bennett and Maverick.
In her new role at CavFutures, Darney will oversee programming initiatives and spearhead community engagement efforts, fostering deeper connections between the collective, University of Virginia student-athletes, and the Charlottesville community. With her extensive background in both sports media and military service, coupled with her academic achievements, Darney is poised to bring a unique perspective and innovative strategies to CavFutures.
Speaking about her appointment, Darney expressed her excitement, stating, "I am honored to join CavFutures and contribute to building the foundation of NIL at UVA. I look forward to continuing to build relationships throughout the Charlottesville community while creating valuable opportunities for our student-athletes."
As CavFutures embarks on its mission to empower UVA student-athletes through Name, Image, and Likeness opportunities, Caroline Darney's appointment signifies a important step forward in the collective's commitment to growth.
